The F21 error code on a Whirlpool front-load washer means the machine could not drain within the expected time. What F21 Means

F21 is a drain fault code. After the wash cycle, the Whirlpool washer expects to drain the tub in a set amount of time. If water remains in the tub when that timer expires, F21 appears and the cycle stops. The washer is not broken — it is correctly detecting that drainage failed.

Step 1: Clean the Drain Filter (DIY)

The drain filter catches lint, hair, coins, and small items. On most Whirlpool front-load washers, it is located behind a small rectangular access door at the lower-front of the machine, usually on the right side.

How to clean it:

1. Place a shallow pan or towels on the floor in front of the washer.
2. Open the access door and slowly unscrew the filter cap counterclockwise. Water will begin to drain — let it flow into the pan.
3. Once the water stops, fully remove the filter.
4. Rinse the filter under running water and remove any debris.
5. Reinstall the filter, close the access door, and run a Rinse & Spin cycle.

If F21 clears and the machine drains normally, the clogged filter was the cause. No technician needed.

Step 2: Check the Drain Hose

If the filter is clean and F21 still appears, check the drain hose at the back of the machine. It should not be kinked, and it should be positioned correctly in the standpipe (not inserted too far, which can create a siphon effect).

Step 3: Drain Pump Replacement

If cleaning the filter and checking the hose does not resolve F21, the drain pump has likely failed. The drain pump is a mechanical component and will need to be replaced by a technician.
